Necessity for
star delta motor starter
panel
Whenever a large
three phase induction motor
is started directly on line
[DOL] there is a voltage dip
in the entire supply line
due to large starting
current [typically 6~ 10
times the motor's rated
current].
To limit this large starting
current and the associated
voltage dip and the sudden
acceleration of the motor
one can use fully automatic
star delta motor starter
panel.
Under star delta motor
starting the starting
current is limited by
starting the motor under
reduced voltage. Full
voltage is supplied to the
motor when it has reached
close to [~ 85%] of its
rated speed. Sudden
acceleration of the motor
[stress on the mechanical
components] is thus reduced
significantly.
Star delta motor starter
panel is simple and rugged
in comparison to other
reduced voltage motor
starting methods.
Star delta motor starter
panel is one of the cheapest
reduced voltage motor
starting methods.
Star delta motor starter
panel is well suited
for
motors requiring low
starting torques.

Limitations /
drawbacks
Although the Star delta
motor starter panel has many
advantages and is very
popular this method is not
without demerits. Some of
the limitations
/ drawbacks of the Star
delta motor starter panel
are
Star delta motor starter
panel is not suited in
applications where the motor
is heavily loaded at start
up time. In other words
where motor required heavy
starting torque then star
delta motor starter panel
might not be the most
suitable motor starting
method.
Star delta motor starter
panel uses six connection
cables against three cables
in DOL starting.
During switch over from star
to delta connection there is
a momentary break in current
supply to the motor. In some
cases high harmonics can be
generated during this
transfer.

For
applications where star
delta motor starting is
